The Hairy Psychologist is actually Professor David Sanders, Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of Sunderland in North-East England. “What does Emeritus Professor mean?” you may well be asking. Basically it means they don’t pay him any more now that he’s retired from the University, but they still let him use the library and the car park. Not that he does use the car park much as he now lives in France with his wife who is also a Professor Emerita.

Since retiring, David has written a distance learning unit on mental health and edited a book about the A6 murder. He intends to complete a rather controversial book about mental illness but is easily distracted and is way behind schedule. Throughout his career he was well known for his lectures which sought to entertain as well as educate and he remains a passionate believer in improving the public understanding of Psychology. Unsurprisingly then, for the last ten years (apart from the Covid years) he has been a regular speaker on cruise ships across the world. This website is designed to outline the content of his shipboard presentations, share his thoughts after each journey, and make available follow-up material for anyone who wishes to know more about the subjects he talks about, usually in the form of a quiz. There is also a comment form for feedback and suggestions for new presentations. Click on the links at the top to navigate the site.
